Bulldogs score a defensive victory over Moscow
SANDPOINT — In a critical Inland Empire League divisional basketball game, the Sandpoint girls overpowered Moscow 55-44 at Les Rogers Court Friday night.
Junior guard Ashleigh Mire led the Bulldogs with 12 points and three assists. However, it was Sandpoint's defensive efforts that coach Scott Salesky said was key.
"Defensively, we had awesome intensity from about the middle of the second quarter to the end of the game," said Salesky. "At one point they (Moscow) were up by 10 points, but then we got going and the girls just bore down defensively like maniacs."
Sandpoint senior post Elle Carne had 10 rebounds and nine points, while junior post Kendal Burt had eight points and seven steals. Senior Kelsey James finished with 10 points and five steals.
"Moscow scored just four points in the third quarter and our defense spurred the offense," said Salesky. "We played very well defensively Tuesday night against Lake City — we played even better tonight."
In the second half, Sandpoint posted 16 unanswered points and successfully shutdown a fourth quarter rally by Moscow.
The Bears were led on the scoreboard by senior Jacki Calhoun who posted a game-high 19 points.
Sandpoint plays host to Post Falls on Tuesday at Les Rogers Court.
