Area getting better only for the wealthy
Regarding your article in the Jan. 8, 2005, edition of the Bee, "Unemployment numbers continue to drop"
Sandpoint — it keeps getting better and better. The writer is absolutely right. Sandpoint is getting better and better, but not for the majority of citizens who live here, try to make a living and raise their families here.
It keeps getting better and better for the landlords who charge excessive rents, the gas stations who sell gas at prices higher than anywhere else in the nation, the grocery stores that sell everyday necessities at resort prices, the employers who exploit the local labor force by paying wages with no benefits that are nowhere near the cost of living here and now, with the recent real estate boom, local government will benefit from higher property values which in turn create higher property taxes.
But the writer is right. For some who have made their money elsewhere and have come here, Sandpoint is getting better and better.
