Plow should have run during Monday storm

| January 19, 2005 8:00 PM

There are some professions that do not avail themselves to taking all of the state holidays, or being subject to on-call duty during holidays. These include jobs in retail, hospitality, and most of all, health and safety.

You can imagine my frustration after driving home — a 90-minute drive that normally is less then 45 minutes — in absolutely terrible and frightening road conditions, passing only one plow on Highway 95 near Naples heading northbound, but then to see the snow plow sitting out of service on the Grouse Creek Road was maddening.

I am not sure what kind of weather-related emergency it takes to call in all of the road works, but I would think that Monday was a great example of a need to pay the overtime to provide road safety in lieu of observing the holiday, and if Dr. Martin Luther King were alive, I'm sure that if driving in North Idaho, he would have liked snow plows in full operation in those road conditions as well.
