NICAN's lawsuit simply does not make sense

| July 18, 2005 9:00 PM

It was with a great deal of relief that I read in this morning's paper of Ms. Sedler's filing of another lawsuit against construction of the Sand Creek Byway. (One cannot help but wonder why it is necessary to bow and scrape to the supposed sensibilities of those opposed to the project by calling it a "byway" rather than a bypass — but, I digress.) I had become concerned of late that the public spirit in the local affiliate of CAVE (Citizens Against Virtually Everything) had run out of steam and logic had become the governing mode of their behavior.

I couldn't help but wonder however if the lawsuit was filed on the same day last week that the line of vehicles awaiting their turn to navigate the canyons of First Avenue reached nearly half way back to the south end of the Long Bridge. Do you suppose that the length of the traffic lines through and approaching Sandpoint from either direction have any relationship to the mindless, persistent and pointless resistance to the bypass? Not having the direct line to supreme wisdom that CAVE enjoys, I cannot discern how refusal to build a bypass to carry traffic that does not need or want to view beautiful downtown Sandpoint through the blue fumes of diesel smoke improves the economic and esthetic ambience of the city.

It is indeed comforting to know that Ms. Sedler and her coterie have the knowledge and determination to prevent completion of a project that has been an increasing need for nearly a half century and approved by a majority every time it was put to a vote. What would we do without those of superior wisdom who look out for the commoners?
