Sandpoint tops Cranbrook at district tourney

COEUR d'ALENE — Tyler Crabb and Adam Hodges each had four hits, and Crabb drove in three runs, as the Sandpoint Lakers advanced at the class AA Area A (district) baseball tournament with a 12-9 win over the Cranbrook Bandits on a hot Thursday evening at McEuen Field.

Ricky Klontz added three hits and Steve Wold had two hits, including a homer, for the fourth-seeded Lakers, who will face top-seeded Lewis-Clark at 1 p.m. today. Cranbrook drops to the loser's bracket and will play tonight at 7 against the loser of today's 4 p.m. contest between Coeur d'Alene and Trail, British Columbia.

Glen Poelstra got the win for the Lakers (17-28-1), striking out nine in seven-plus innings.

Lewiston, Orofino win

at District 1 tourney

OSBURN — On the first day of the District 1 "A" American Legion Tournament, both the Lewiston Cubs and Orofino Merchants were able to outlast their opponents to move on in the winner's bracket at Morehouse Field.

In the day's opening game, Orofino Merchant Stewart Rouse hit a two-run home run to put his team ahead 12-1 after three innings. Orofino would pick up a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the fourth on a fielder's choice RBI and a one-run RBI from Jared Harding to take the opener 14-1.

St. Maries pitcher Travis Christenson picked up the loss for the Savages on Thursday.

Lewiston 13

Silver Valley 0

In the nightcap, Lewiston opened a 7-0 lead after the first inning and defeated the host Silver Valley Miners 13-0. Lewiston Cub Adam Carson picked up a two-run double to start the Cub offense.

The Cubs would also get RBIs from Treavor Yardley and Tyler Carson to add to their scoring on Thursday.

Silver Valley starting pitcher Kevin Rose struck out two in the loss.

Both winning teams from Thursday will return to action today as the Lewiston Cubs will face Coeur d'Alene at 2:30 p.m. and the Orofino Merchants face the league champion Moscow Blue Devils at 5 p.m. on Friday.

Silver Valley and St. Maries return to action Saturday, with the Miners playing the 9 a.m. game and the St. Maries Savages taking the field at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in Osburn.
