Disrespect toward flag was sad, disappointing

| June 1, 2005 9:00 PM

On Tuesday I crossed the Long Bridge south bound. Next to Swans Landing some one had put up a display of 6 small American flags and one larger flag to draw attention to their yard sale that took place over the Memorial Day weekend.

During the weekend a number of the flags had blown over and were rolling around in the dirt. I was disappointed and ashamed that while thousands of people drove by the display on Memorial Day Weekend, no one was willing to take the time to stop and place the flags upright in their display.

Our American flag is a symbol of our great country. No, we do not do everything right but the world is a better place because of the good old U.S.A. In remembering our history ,I have seen pictures of American solider rushing to pick up our flag off the battle field and to carry it forward. From the start of our republic, people have taken care of our flag. During the Revolutionary War, Civil War, World War I, World War II, , Korea, Vietnam, and Iraq and other sad times in our history we treated our flag with care. Thousands have come home draped in our flag.

But this weekend, we as a people were to busy to stop and pick up the fags and put them back in their display even on Memorial Day.

It is sad and disappointing that so many of us could not take the time to pause and remember we are free because of those who died to protect our country and our flag.
