Keep sidewalks in shape and keep city's walkability

| June 1, 2005 9:00 PM

With the onset of better weather and longer daylight, people are out and about more. Walking is an enjoyable and healthy activity and more and more people are increasing their pedestrian activities.

Homeowners are reminded that they are responsible for the public right of way in front of their property. Property owners need to ensure the sidewalk is safe and in good repair. But equally important as checking the sidewalk is the inspection of any trees that may be in the right of way. It's essential to ensure that they are healthy and free of decay that could weaken and cause them to fall injuring individuals or damaging property. Low hanging branches need to be trimmed so no one hits their head. Many sight-impaired people enjoy walking also and we need to take extra caution to not allow unsafe conditions that would potentially cause harm.

The City Council must approve of any tree removal in the public right of way. Such approval is obtained by making a request to the Public Works Committee, which meets at 5:30 p.m. on the first Wednesday of each month. The committee then sends its recommendation to the full council at the regular meeting on the third Wednesday of each month. A tree that is on the city's approved tree list must replace trees that are removed from the right of way. More information can be obtained by calling the Public Works Department at 263 3407.

If you are interested in replacing the sidewalk, you need to follow the same procedure as above. City crews will remove the old sidewalk and haul it away for you, free of charge.

The City Council has made it a priority to promote and improve the walkability through out the city of Sandpoint. This takes a cooperative effort of both the city and the homeowner and makes it better for everyone.
