Helander and Wilson win handball tournament

SANDPOINT — Sandpoint West Athletic Club hosted the 17th annual "Spring Classic" handball tournament last weekend.

Doubles events started on Friday evening with singles following on Saturday. The championship for each event was decided on Sunday.

The tournament is known for it's hospitality as well as top competition and drew nearly 40 players from as far away as Las Vegas and Seattle.

The Open/A Singles event was won by Jack Cosby of Spokane, defeating Greg Pearce of Palouse.

Don Helander, tournament director, won the singles championship in the Open/A 40 and Over division with a win over Joe Cox of Seattle.

The B singles champion was Grant Nichols of Moses Lake defeating Kalen Stroyan of Spokane. Local Sandpoint West member Dave Fienhold placed third.

The C singles crown pitted two Spokane women together who were also doubles partners. Lynn Sorenson outlasted Shirley Soth for the title.

In doubles action SWAC member Don Wilson and partner John Layman (Spokane) defeated SWAC members Ryan Luttman and Sam Sletager for the Open/A championship. Don Helander and partner Bruce Sletager placed third.

The B/C doubles was won by SWAC member Brian Higgins and partner Joe Cox (Seattle) as the defeated George Kucharis and Len Carroll both of Las Vegas. SWAC members John Windju and Jim Lovell placed third.
