Walter John Mikol, 82, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Tuesday, March 1, 2005.

Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 5, 2005, in Coffelt's Moon Chapel. The Rev. Dennis C. Day will officiate.

Funeral services will also be held at the Moritz Funeral Home in Tappen, N.Y., on Tuesday, March 7, 2005. Entombment will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Putnam Valley, N.Y.

Walter was born in Yonkers, N.Y., on Oct. 30, 1922. He attended school in Yonkers and graduated from high school there.

He joined the U.S. Army in 1943 in New York, serving in World War II. He was with Battery D, 550th Calvary Battalion, seeing action in Normandy, northern France and Rhineland. He also served with General Patton.

He married the love of his life, Mary Ann Kreywe, in January 1943. He worked for New York Bell in Yonkers, N.Y., for 42 years prior to retirement.

In May 2004, he moved to Sandpoint to be closer to his daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Peter Smith. In July 2004, he established residence at The Bridge and thoroughly enjoyed his new social life.

Walter enjoyed his life in Sandpoint and living at The Bridge. He enjoyed being Grandpa to the grandchildren and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends. His children will remember him as a wonderful father.

He is survived by four children, Robert W. Mikol of Pennsylvania, Douglas W. Mikol of New York, Bruce W. Mikol of New York, and Karen N. Smith of Sandpoint; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; and a special friend and constant companion since July, Jean Yunger of Sandpoint.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 58 years, Mary Ann.

Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care of Coffelt Funeral Service of Sandpoint.
