Farewell to Harold's
I think I speak for many when I say what a devastating thing it will be for us to lose Harold's.
It seems like Harold's has been there forever. It has been a place where elderly people in the neighborhood could walk to get their groceries. For me, it has been on my way and I could stop there and get what I needed without having to walk so far when my feet hurt so bad. They had good prices on fruit and vegetables, always the cheapest bananas in town, very good meat, ground beef so lean you almost had to add a little fat to cook it. The bakery was wonderful and the pressure-fried chicken was the best in town.
As for the little cafe, the food was good and a reasonable price. Where else in town could you get a biscuit and delicious sausage gravy and all the coffee you could drink for $1.59?
In May 1953 they gave away Swansdown cake mix and asked us to bring back a cake to be judged on a certain day. I made mine like a swan with fluffy white frosting and won first price — a Sunbeam Mixmaster. For over 50 years I have been using that Sunbeam mixer to make my cake, cookies and divinity candy.
To Ralph and Mollie and all the employees who have waited on us all these years, we wish you well. You have no idea how many people have been telling me how much they will miss all of you. Thanks for all the years.
