Robert Kemp Slaughter Jr., 92, a longtime Spokane resident died Sunday, March 13, 2005.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, 5720 South Perry, Spokane, with burial to follow at Moran Cemetery.

Kemp was born in Ruxton, Md., on Nov. 12, 1912.

In 1947, Kemp moved his wife, Betty, and two children, Barbara (Bobbie) and R. (Butch) Kemp III to Spokane to work for Kaiser Aluminum at the Trentwood plant.

What began as his basement hobby became the formation of Acme Machine Works in 1953, designing and building precision machinery, primarily for the aluminum industry world-wide. In 1975, Kemp sold Acme Machine Works and retired in Sandpoint, Idaho, until returning to Spokane in 1996.

Kemp's idea of a great time was skiing on the waters of Priest Lake and Lake Pend Oreille or on the slopes of Schweitzer Basin at the speed of fast. He gave up skiing at age 84 when they moved back to Spokane to reside at the Waterford.

Kemp is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty; his daughter, Bobbie Matthews of Portland, Ore.; his son, Butch, and wife Barbara of Spokane; three grandsons, Mike, Mark and Patrick Matthews; two granddaughters, Marcie Meier of Portland and Jennifer Gee of Spokane; and six great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to either Spokane Humane Society or the Panhandle Animal Shelter, 1604 Great Northern Rd., Sandpoint, ID 83864.
