Two killed in crash on Highway 54
ATHOL — A Sandpoint teenager and a Spirit Lake man were killed Sunday night in a two-vehicle collision in northern Kootenai County.
Michael P. Henry, 52, the driver of one vehicle, and Joshua A. Smith, 13, a passenger in the other vehicle, died of their injuries.
Diane M. Willis, 39, of Sandpoint, was northbound just after 6 p.m. on Clagstone Road, when she ran the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 54, according to an Idaho State Police investigation report.
Her 1998 Subaru Outback station wagon collided with the driver's side of Henry's 1996 Subaru Legacy station wagon, which was westbound on Highway 54, the report says.
The Willis vehicle overturned, ejecting Smith, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, the report says.
Willis and two passengers in Henry's vehicle were taken to Kootenai Medical Center.
One passenger, Corey L. Kunde, 15, Spirit Lake was listed in fair condition at KMC Monday afternoon. The other passenger, Brandi C. Kunde, also 15, was treated and released.
An investigation is continuing.
A fund has been established by a family friend to help with Smith's burial expenses.
Lisa Rivera, whose son Daniel had Smith as an overnight guest Saturday, established an account at US Bank to help with burial costs, estimated at more than $5,000.
"I don't want them to cremate him," she said.
Willis, who is Smith's mother, was notified Monday morning of they boy's death, Rivera said. Her husband, Smith's step-father, Rex Willis, is on disability suffering from multiple sclerosis and lacks the money for a burial, Rivera said.
Donations can be made to the account for Josh Smith at any US Bank branch.
