Trojans sweep Bulldogs at Travers

SANDPOINT — With a grand total of three home runs, a triple and three singles, Erika Willy led the Post Falls Trojans to an Inland Empire League doubleheader sweep over Sandpoint at Travers Park Monday.

"Willy had an outstanding day," said Post Falls softball coach Jack Foster. "Considering this is only her first year playing softball, she is doing great."

The Trojans kicked off the avalanche with a 16-run rally in the second inning of the opener, which ended after five innings due to the 10-run rule, 23-4.

"We just came out swinging. Lately, the girls have been hitting the ball good and we just seem to get into a rhythm," said Foster.

In the second game, Foster said his girls kind of opened the door for Sandpoint and the Bulldogs took advantage of it.

Sandpoint scored seven runs in the first two innings, before the Trojans regained control with a seven-run gain in the fifth led by a three-run homer from Willy.

"The one thing you have to give Sandpoint credit for is they will keep battling," said Foster. "They are having a great time, they are playing hard and there isn't much more than you can ask for than that.

"Sandpoint is definitely scrappy and we just got enough done to hang onto the second game."

The Bulldog bats were led by catcher Emily Reina who hit a RBI triple in game one that spurred a four-run inning for Sandpoint, she also had a hit in the second game. Sandpoint also had a pair of hits from center fielder Kyra Crabb and pitcher Nicole Buratto.

"We came out and laid a big egg in the first game," said Sandpoint coach Derek Dickinson. "But in the second one, we bounced back and they played with a lot of heart, a lot of pride and made a lot of improvements."

Sandpoint plays host to Priest River today at Travers.
