MOSCOW — It may have taken a couple of days and a pair of road trips to get it done. But when it was over, the Sandpoint baseball team defeated Moscow 6-4 in their 4A Region 1 tournament opener Wednesday.

In a game that began on Monday, Sandpoint held a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when the game was called due to rain.

Wednesday, the contest continued in Moscow with pitcher Glenn Poelstra returning to the mound for Sandpoint.

"The kids really stayed focused and they came out the job done and it was awesome," said Sandpoint coach Dave Siemsen.

Sandpoint also had some outstanding performances at the plate with Jake Way hitting a two-run homer in the sixth inning and triples hit by Ricky Klontz and Noah Hawkins.

"They know what they can do and they think they're the best team in the league," said Siemsen, who now will turn the teams attention to No. 1 Post Falls.

"We'll need to hit and play sound defense and in the majority of the meetings with them this season we've played better than them," he added.

Sandpoint plays Post Falls today for the 4A Region 1 championship at 4 p.m. at Post Falls High School . The winner advances to state, while the loser plays the winner of Moscow-Lakeland on Friday. The winner of Friday's game will travel to Lewiston for a state play-in game on Saturday.
