Sandpoint slighted in opening round
RUPERT — As the only girl representing Sandpoint, junior Ashleigh Mire shot 89 on the par-72, 5,498-yard Rupert Country Club course Tuesday in the rain-delayed 4A state golf tournament.
"Ashleigh could of been in the running for a medal for a while, but she ran into some trouble with her short game and had a couple double boogies on the back nine," said Sandpoint golf coach Mike Keough.
The boys, who finished in last place out of seven teams, were led by Joey Lovell's 11-over-par score of 83.
"It was windy and cold but at least it was dry," said Keough, after spending an extra day in Rupert due to Monday's series of rain delays.
"I think the elements effected them a lot. We had a bunch of delays and it was hard to keep everything mentally together," said Keough. "But all the kids still should be proud of what they did to get there, because they earned their way there."
After advancing into the second round, the Bishop Kelly boys won the 36-hole event with a score of 605. Post Falls tied for fourth with 616.
In the girls tournament, which was shortened to 27 holes from 36, the Knights won with a score of 494.
