Why weren't officials at SEED's growth forum?

| November 21, 2005 8:00 PM

Recently, the Bonner County Human Rights Task Force and SEED (Seeking Equitable Economic Development) put on a presentation at the City Forum about the opportunities and challenges of growth.

About 50-60 people showed up to participate in the five hour program and discuss the many important issues that we face locally. It was a very useful and educational forum to explore possible solutions to issues such as property taxes, housing, education, etc. You would think that all our elected officials would, and certainly should, attend this kind of program. It is my understanding that invitations were sent out to all these people.

The new candidates for City Council, Steve Lockwood and Helen Newton — now successful candidates — were there, actively participating the whole five hours because they cared.

But, where was the Mayor and most of the City Council? The county commissioners were not there. Neither were representative from the city and county planning and zoning commissions. Sen. Shawn Keough and Rep. Eric Anderson were not there although Rep. George Eskridge came in during the closing minutes.

I guess that is a politician's way of saying they were there, but in reality they were not.

Do they fell they know everything about the pressing issues we face? What about exploring possible solutions that just might ease of the problems? Do they fell they don't have to listen to people's concerns?
