Oakley and Mire lead Sandpoint past Mt. Baker

SANDPOINT — In a physical, low scoring game Sandpoint guards Ashleigh Mire and Brittany Oakley had big fourth quarters as the Bulldogs were able to put visiting Mt. Baker away 40-27 Monday night.

"Their guards shot the ball really well in the fourth quarter," said Mt. Baker coach Dan Loewen. "They execute well on offense. They move the ball well and are very patient."

Kendal Burt led the Bulldogs with 10 points and eight rebounds, Oakley added 10 points and Mire finished with eight. Lynn DiBenedetto added six points and nine rebounds as the Bulldogs (3-0) continued to spread the wealth around on offense.

"We have a lot of different weapons," said Bulldog coach Jim Alsagar. "This team makes great adjustments and has been a pleasure to coach."

Nicole Book led Mt. Baker, from Crestin B C., with 13 points. The game was closer than the score would indicate, the Bulldogs led by three to start the fourth quarter.

"It looked a little like hockey some of the time. It was a low scoring game and a real battle under the boards," said Alsagar.

The defensive pressure of Mire and Oakley is leading to steals and easy buckets for the Bulldogs, who host Newport on Friday with a chance to push their record to 4-0 on the young season.
