Sandpoint loses tight match to Lake City in four

| October 4, 2005 9:00 PM

COEUR d'ALENE — Four Lake City players had eight or more kills in a 25-14, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19 IEL victory over the visiting Bulldogs.

Tabi Mabrey had 11 kills and three aces for Lake City (7-2, 15-6). Renee Bordelon added 10 kills, 13 assists, four digs and two aces, Kaylen Meredith had nine kills, three blocks and three digs, and Riki Moreland had eight kills, two blocks and two aces.

"Sandpoint played really good defense, but we moved the ball around a lot," Lake City coach Jenny Owen said. "We're finally starting to click on offense."

Kendal Burt had nine kills to lead Sandpoint (2-6, 2-9), but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs were having trouble creating hitting opportunities.

"Our passing wasn't getting the ball to the front line," said coach Karen Alsagar. "When we did they weren't swinging hard."

The match seemed to turn when the Bulldogs had the lead and momentum in the pivotal third game, only to watch both disappear, dropping the game 25-23 and never seeming to recover.

The Bulldogs host league leading Moscow Thursday night at 7 p.m.

JV game:

Kelly Aylward had an excellent serving night as the Bulldogs beat Lake City's JV 25-12, 25-18, and 15-11. Their record now stands at 6-3.

Badgers come back for win

BONNERS FERRY — The Lady Badger-Spartan volleyball match was a 14-25, 16-25, 25-15, 25-14, 15-11 knucklebiter, but Bonners Ferry came back big for the win.

Priest River stormed through the first two games, but Bonners Ferry knocked off the Spartan streak in the third, catching up at six points and never looking back, Lady Badger Becky Lowther leading the way with precision kills.

The fifth was a point-for-point battle, but Bonners Ferry pulled ahead and secured the match.

This was the fourth time Bonners Ferry played the Spartans this year, and they'd won every previous match, said Bonners Ferry coach Janis Tucker. But the girls realized that just because they'd won didn't mean they could back down, she added.

Lowther led with nine kills.

"She can see where the holes are and she hits around them," Tucker said.

Katie Poston followed closely with eight kills for the Badgers. Jennifer Youngwirth led with 25 assists and four aces and Lowther had three aces.

For Priest River, Amanda Corning had nine kills and Lacy Hopkins and Liz Karkoski had seven. Karkoski also led digs, with nine, and Molly Blankenship had seven aces. Tami Cox followed with five aces.

Clark Fork score:

The Wampus Cats won the first game, but Wallace was able to close the next three beating the Cats 20-25, 25-9, 25-21, and 25-15. Stacey Hinsz had 9 kills, 14 blocks, and 10 digs to lead the Miners. Tia Becker led the Cats with 5 aces and seven assists, Tiffany Van Buren led the team with 6 kills, and Megan Hess had 21 digs. Head coach Lisa Allen says the team will get another shot at the Miners in the Timberlake tournament, and must beat them to get to state.
