Americans must face reality, seek energy independence

| October 10, 2005 9:00 PM

For the first time in our nation's history we are at war without any sacrifices being asked for on the home front. Our taxes have been cut while the country drowns in red ink. I am convinced that any country that can put a man on the moon can achieve energy independence by 2020 if we are willing to make the commitment necessary and — dare I say it — sacrifices.

Here in Bonner County it seems that no one wants to give up their SUVs or big 4x4 pickups. They seem perfectly willing to pay $3/gallon for gas as long as they don't have to make any sacrifices. What are they going to do when it hits $4/gallon or more? I for one am already looking for a more efficient vehicle and I get 28 miles per gallon now. Isn't about time we faced reality and got serious about energy independence.
