Fire highlights need for documenting possessions

| October 10, 2005 9:00 PM

Sadly, yesterday our friends, Bill and Sharon Downing of Sandpoint lost their home do to a fire while they were in Coeur d'Alene shopping.

No one was injured and the dog and cat got out but the house and everything in it was a total loss except for Bill's prized autographed No. 80 Jerry Rice jersey the firemen saved. Yes, they do have adequate insurance but how does one replace all of the personal items we all own and treasure?

As a tip to everyone, videotape or take photos of the inside of your home and put those, along with all your important papers, deeds, titles, insurance papers, jewelry, will, etc. in a fireproof safe or a fireproof locking box which can be easily purchased. If you own a computer, have a back-up disk of your hardware and other important information put into your safe or fireproof box. You would all be very surprised at the actual cost of things if you had to replace everything you owned except for the clothes you are wearing.
