SAGLE — Four people were injured Sunday in separate but related crashes on U.S. Highway 95 south of Sandpoint, according to Idaho State Police.

State police said 47-year-old Sagle resident Thomas J. Schultz was southbound in a 1991 Geo Storm when he crossed the center line and crashed head-on into a northbound Ford Tempo driven by Benjamin A. Woelk.

The crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. south of the Bottle Bay Road intersection.

Schultz and a passenger, identified as 35-year-old Jacqualyn Smith, were taken to Bonner General Hospital, while Woelk, a 25-year-old from Lynnwood, Wash., was flown to Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane.

State police said it was unclear if anybody involved in the crash were wearing seatbelts. The crash remains under investigation and ISP said alcohol was a factor.

The collision closed half of the two-lane stretch of highway, creating traffic delays at both ends of the crash site.

A second crash happened two hours later, when a northbound driver stuck in traffic executed a U-turn without yielding to southbound traffic, state police said. Andrew J. Feuling, a 28-year-old from Sandpoint, pulled into the southbound lane and his GMC Sierra pickup struck in the side by a Ford Escape driven by Tera J. Fournier, 19, of Sandpoint.

Feuling reportedly was not injured, but Fournier was taken to Bonner General. Both drivers were wearing seatbelts, according to ISP.

That crash also remained under investigation.
