A mind, like a book, is better when it's open

| September 3, 2005 9:00 PM

I must have touched some nerve for Jim Kelly to get so fired up. But Jim is chiding the wrong guy. I'm all for people making up their own minds. My only hope is that they will use lots of the resources available in this Internet age, not just one, clearly biased, news source. Telling people what to think is too big a responsibility, at least for me.

Mr. Kelly suggests that the University of Maryland study must have been defective. How does he know that? Apparently his yardstick is whether or not it was critical of Fox.

Mr. Kelly asked where I would suggest he go to become better informed. There are lots of places in addition to Fox, just look around. And, Jim, you're wrong about whether I can tolerate Fox viewers. Many of my friends are and that leads to lively debates.

The important thing in all this is being well informed. If one only uses a single outlet, be it Fox, the Daily Bee, the Spokesman Review, etc. you are limiting yourself to one point of view. Without looking at other perspectives we really don't have enough information to effectively make up our minds.

However, if Mr. Kelly wants to stick with Fox that's clearly his choice and I wouldn't, and probably couldn't change his mind. He may be one of these folks who knows what he knows and doesn't want to be bothered with the facts. But remember Jim, a mind is like a book, it works better when it's open.
