Jack Young, 83, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2005 at his Rocky Point Home in Dover, Idaho.

A celebration of life will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, 2005, at Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel with Steve Neuder officiating.

Jack was born on July 27, 1922, in San Francisco, Calif., the son of Raymond "Jack" and Iva (Babcock) Young. He grew up in Spokane, Wash., attended local schools and graduated from North Central High School in 1947.

His high school education was interrupted when he lied about his age and joined the Washington National Guard at age 15. Jack was shipped to Pearl Harbor, arriving on Dec. 10, 1941; just three days after the Japanese attack. He served with the 3rd Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was medically retired on July 4, 1945, at the age of 23 after being seriously wounded at Anzio, where his actions in combat earned him a Bronze Star and Purple Heart.

Everyone ribbed Jack when he needed his mother's written permission to marry June Houston, his childhood friend, in Colorado Springs, Colo., at the tender age of 20, on Jan. 10, 1943

He received his bachelor of arts degree from the University of California at Redlands in 1953. In 1959, he went to work as a right-of-way appraiser for Orange County, Callif., at the time the fastest growing county in America. His team appraised everything that lay in the path of all freeways entering and exiting Orange County. He worked on this project for 10 years.

In 1969, Jack moved the family to Sandpoint, Idaho, just 30 minutes from his mother-in-law's homestead in the Hoodoo Valley and close to his Spokane relatives and roots. In Sandpoint, Jack worked as a Realtor, broker, and commercial/residential appraiser. Jack and June founded Rainbow Realty in 1971. Jack taught appraisal courses throughout the region, including the University of Idaho and colleges in Boise and served on the governor's original five-man commission to establish statewide licensing requirements for residential and commercial appraisers.

Jack was the consensus choice to lead the appraisal team that valued more than 24,000 properties in Bonner County over a three-year period, and trained the assessor staff for the county. He served as a consultant for two years afterwards.

Jack's hobbies included old cars, old stamps, old coins, and new board games. He held membership in Eagles, Elks, Lions and Rotary Club where he served as club president from 1986-1988. He was recently recognized for his assistance in starting the new Centennial Charter club in Ponderay. Jack is also a Paul K. Harris Fellow through Rotary International. He was a fixture in Fourth of July parades either with his old cars or his 1926 Bulldog Mack Truck.

He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond "Jack" Young; his mother, Iva Walden; his stepfather, Harold Walden; and brothers Bob and Garth Young.

Survivors include his wife, June Young of Sandpoint; his stepfather, Barney Riley of Skiatook, Okla.; his sisters, Patricia (Arno) Nelly of Las Vegas, Nev., and Sydne (Arley) Getz of Bullhead City, Nev.; sons, Michael (Susie) Young of Spokane and Dan (Holly) Young of Sandpoint; daughters, Barbara Fairlight of Sandpoint and Marilyn (Leo) Jones of Fountain Valley, Calif.; Jack's "big kid" Al Bricker of Sandpoint; grandchildren, Erik (Summer) Young of Sandpoint, Evelyn and Adam Jones of Fountain Valley, Amanda Young of Mankato, Minn., Joshua (Trisha) Young of Kearny, Neb., and Sammy Jo Young of Thornton, Colo.; and great-grandson, Jayden Young of Kearney, Neb.

Memorial may be made to the charity of your choice or to the free clinic Partners in Care at Panhandle Health District, 1020 Michigan Ave., Sandpoint, Idaho 83864.
