Angels, CAP and Coldwater deserve community's thanks

| September 21, 2005 9:00 PM

On Sept. 1-2, an amazingly unheralded event happened in Sandpoint. The Angels Over Sandpoint distributed more than 425 backpacks filled with school supplies purchased using the request lists of teachers in Bonner County. The money was raised from private requests by the Angels and Coldwater Creek matched the funds we raised.

This project began long before the dates above. Shirley and Becky of Community Action Partnership contacted their clients whose children needed financial help to purchase the sometimes costly classroom supplies, including a scientific calculator for high school and multiple notebooks. I must say, I remember when all we needed was a pencil, eraser, paper and plenty of glue to eat. A group of dedicated Angels diligently shopped for the best prices from our generous merchants in town.

I feel the Angels and CAP should be recognized for this huge effort of purchasing these supplies and putting them together in heavy-duty bags supplied by Coldwater Creek. Then each child who came to CAP was given their individually named bag and the opportunity to choose their own backpack.

There were too many Angels involved in this project (and you know who you are) to name in this space, but I do feel compelled to thank Anna, a 10-year-old who came all four days to help with the identification of supplies and then to help with the distribution process. Anna was a great help to this "older" lady, who could not identify some of the supplies. Anna will certainly be a very well-trained volunteer for the next generation.

If you are a contributor or a merchant, an Angel or a Coldwater Creek employee, thank you for helping our school children with their supplies.
