Why don't stores add access for handicapped?

| September 26, 2005 9:00 PM

In our liberal, politically-correct society we shun bigotry and prejudice in all forms, or do we? We no longer see signs prohibiting entry to persons of certain races, and indeed all races are welcome in all facilities.

And yet, right here in Bonner County, many business establishments that have been extensively remodeled still do not provide access to the handicapped.

The American Disabilities Act stipulates that at any time remodeling is done in a facility open to the public, handicapped access shall be provided.

What is most discouraging is that over the past few years I have asked various food service establishments undergoing remodeling to provide such access in order for my husband and I to patronize them.

Sadly, they have not seen fit to do so despite the fact that in many cases access could be provided with a simple ramp and at no great expense.
