Phillips needs to act responsibly as commissioner

| April 17, 2006 9:00 PM

The Bonner County Commissioner Marcia Phillips needs to act responsibly in that position.

For the first part of the Hidden Lakes meeting she had her nose in a very thick file not paying attention to Commissioner Joe Young, who ran the meeting nor when Clare Marley was explaining things.

After the development people and the audience had their say, she launched into a long lecture on how wonderful the plan was. She actually sounded like she was working for Chuck Reeves, the developer from California, the same place she originated from.

And nothing was said how she and Judy Conlan could perform the required property assessments on the delinquent 1,300 parcels nor the new 500 or so parcels in the Hidden Lakes project. Those new taxes from new construction are pie in the sky and partly to blame for our escalating property taxes. She hasn't seemed to have learned anything in her three-year tenure. Is it her ethical position to advocate for a particular developer?

It's time for a moratorium on development until the commissioners and the county assessors get their act together. Replacing the chairwoman and chief assessor would be a good start.
