Community's help needed to paint historic caboose

| April 19, 2006 9:00 PM

Next year will be the 100th anniversary of not only Bonner County, but also the arrival of the Spokane International Railroad. A monument to the railroad is the ex-Union Pacific caboose given to the Bonner County Historical Society and on display outside its front door. As part of the celebration, those of us concerned with such things would like to see the caboose repainted and the Spokane International lettering restored. The estimated cost is $2,000.

We have asked the Union Pacific if they would like to do the job and they declined. So we have sought out other professional type help and have a contractor's estimate. Unfortunately, we can't make the commitment until the funds are on hand. Wanting to be ready whenever it stops raining, the same paint used by UP (armor yellow polyurethane) has been acquired and is on hand waiting to be applied.

This is one of those jobs that require community support. We are asking that all those who like railroads and would like the entrance to the museum to look sharp, consider a donation to the Fund to Repaint Old C-21. Send them to Bonner County Historical Society, 611 South Ella, Sandpoint, ID 83864. Please indicate where you want your money to go and look to seeing a fresh, bright caboose the next time you pass that way.

It will brighten your day, and we will all feel better.
