SHS club's focus is on compassion, not politics

| April 19, 2006 9:00 PM

Hooray for the brave youth who strive to be more supportive, aware, and responsible then some adults with their narrow-mindedness.

Thank you to Jim Soper and the Lake Pend Oreille School Board for making the students a priority over politics. It does not detract from anyone's education to have a club that meets after school. What can detract from our children's education are adults who are afraid of anyone or anything that doesn't fall into step behind them and their beliefs, and who teach fear and hate at home. The way to protect all children from sexual predators is to educate ourselves and our kids to the real threats. Not to combine sexual preference of consenting individuals with pedophiles or Nazis this simply does more harm to our society.

I have encouraged my daughter to show her support by being involved in the GSA. I am not worried that she will suddenly become a lesbian and run amuck in the halls of Sandpoint High School with her gay friends. I am proud that she is compassionate as Jesus was and that she accepts those who are different whether sexual preference, race, class or ability.

It is actually now estimated that one out of 10 people consider themselves gay. Since we love statistics, two out of four females have been molested by heterosexual males, not homosexuals.

We could definitely use some focus on the world's real dire problems instead of attacking our kids and their support system. Which is not only heartless, it's just plain mean.
