Volunteers make Bonner General a special place
"We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give." — Winston Churchill
The spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in our community. Almost every aspect of life here is better because someone cared enough to dedicate their time to making a difference. April 23-27 is National Volunteer Week, a time to show our gratitude for those who give of themselves to make lives better.
At Bonner General, volunteers are an integral part of the heart and function of our facility. From our dedicated board members to our weekend candy-stripers, our volunteers help make BGH the kind of place where patients feel truly cared for, visitors feel welcome, and employees are glad to come to work.
Most people who come to BGH are familiar with the perky coral-colored uniforms of the BGH Auxiliary. Patients and visitors know that if they have any questions, an Auxiliary member will be happy to help. Members of the BGH Auxiliary and Junior Volunteers (candy-stripers) can be found throughout the hospital, greeting people with a smile and a friendly "How can I help you?"
Auxiliary members can also be counted on to help the employees by folding brochures, running errands, as well as organizing fundraising activities for the hospital such as the upcoming fashion show. In 2005, the Auxiliary members at BGH put in an amazing 8,304 volunteer hours. Their time, effort and companionship are valued by everyone at BGH.
There is a certain group of citizens in our area that are dedicated to improving the health of our community though they are not doctors, nurses, or health care employees. The BGH Board of Directors gives of their time and experience to help lead our hospital now and into the future. The gift of their guidance is appreciated by patients, visitors and especially our staff.
When we or someone we love is diagnosed with a terminal illness, or is close to death, we crave human companionship. But, imagine what it would be like with no one to share that burden. Bonner Community Hospice volunteers strive to make sure that doesn't happen. Their care and experience are a comfort to those who need comforting most. Their insight and understanding help bring light into the dark places. The patients and families whose lives have been touched by hospice volunteers know their care is priceless.
If you've ever walked through the halls of BGH, you've seen the wonderful artwork adorning the walls. What you may not know is that the art would not be there if not for a very special group of talented volunteers. The Art for the Soul Committee brings color, life and warmth to our environment by procuring art — both local and from afar — for the hallways, offices, and patient rooms at BGH. Thanks to Art for the Soul, everyone at the hospital can be touched by the healing power of art.
Speaking of healing, who could forget the time and passion that went into the construction of the Healing Garden? Truly one of Sandpoint's treasures, this garden was brought to life by the drive of hospital and community volunteers. Now that the garden is a reality, volunteers can still be found helping with the maintenance, care and planting that a garden needs to thrive. All who have lent their talents and green thumbs to keep the garden beautiful are treasures as well.
Yes, the spirit of volunteerism is alive and well in our community. And nowhere is this more evident than at Bonner General Hospital. To all of our volunteers — thank you. The hospital wouldn't be the same without you.
