A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday Aug. 11, 2006, at Lakeview Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint with a celebration to follow at the home on Granite Ridge Road.
Steve was born in Ontario, Ore., in April 1938 to Robert and Betty (Kaylor) Van Horne. He grew up in the Caldwell, Idaho, area and attended the College of Idaho and the University of Idaho, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon.
After graduation Steve worked in the television industry in San Francisco, Calif., and in Medford, Ore. In 1965 he moved to Boise where he was in the advertising and public relations business as well as active in various community events: Idaho Press Club, the Idaho Foundation for Medicine and Biology and was a chairman of Boise Music Week.
Steve and his family moved to Sandpoint in 1971 due to involvement with the development of Condo del Sol. In 1973 Steve and Don McCanlies opened Resort Realty.
Steve remained active in the real estate business throughout his life which included serving as president of the Association of Realtors, president of the multiple listing service and many years on the board of each organization as well on the Idaho State Board of Realtors. He was a strong advocate for continuing education and a positive teacher and mentor for new realtors.
Steve was devoted to the extraordinary community of Sandpoint and all of Bonner County. He was very active in the Legion of Fine Arts (the precursor to the Pend Oreille Arts Council) in 1980 he was appointed to the Idaho Commission on the Arts. He was on the Airport Commission and was instrumental in the success of the beginning of the Festival at Sandpoint. Steve loved people and laughter. He was devoted to his family first, real estate second and this was followed by his love of boating, automobiles (especially Cadillacs), reading, fireworks and time on the 'deck' with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of more than 40 years, Sydne; his two remarkable daughters, Rachel (Duane) Nordgaarden of Sandpoint; Stefanie Van Horne in New Zealand and his grandchildren, Bryce, Jordan and Jarae. Steve also leaves behind his brother, the Rev. Peter and his wife Rev. Beverly Van Horne of Farmington, Mo., and nephews Sam and Michael. Steve is also survived by a loving group of care givers from Life Care Center in Sandpoint who helped him during the challenging times of the past several years.
In lieu of flowers donations may made to the Selkirk Association of Realtors in Steve's name for the continuing education and professionalism of realtors.
