Session offers chance for meaningful tax relief

| August 21, 2006 9:00 PM

Finally, Idaho has a governor who listens to what the people want and need and knows how to get the job done.

Finally, a chance for meaningful property tax relief. If this legislation is not enacted, we will most likely see a property tax revolt like we have never seen before. Opposition by school administrators is cause for alarm. If somehow they succeed in blocking this legislation, they will see a substantial decline in the support of school bonds and levies.

The so-called alternative plan proposed by some misguided Democrats is nothing more than a feeble attempt at election year politics. If these Democrats really cared about low-income Idahoans, they would support a substantial increase in the grocery tax credit as has been proposed by Rep. George Eskridge.

This credit (currently $20 per person plus $15 for taxpayers over 65) is claimed as a net credit on state income tax returns and can be claimed only by Idaho residents. Those with little or no taxable income can receive this in cash. Raising this substantially could recompense Idaho families for the one penny increase in sales tax.
