Proposed levy undercuts goal of recent legislation

| August 30, 2006 9:00 PM

The school levy undercuts the purpose of the state legislation designed to get the cost of maintenance and operation of schools off the backs of property owners.

A levy should be used for extraordinary circumstances which could not have been foreseen in the budgetary process. The need for new construction has been seen for more than 15 years. Over the years, the costs of administration have been top heavy with a separate administration building. Some of these funds could have been used to maintain and construct school buildings. Despite the increase in the sales tax for everyone, the property owners are expected to maintain the burden of maintaining schools through levies. No thanks.

Question: Who pays for the elaborate mailings urging people to vote for the school levy?
