SHS wrestlers look solid in dual action
DEER PARK — The Sandpoint wrestling team got the solid performances they expected from their strong stable of seniors, along with a standout performance by a freshman, and beat host Deer Park and Riverside in duals action on Wednesday.
Despite the two Washington schools already having several matches, the Bulldogs looked solid in their first meets of the season, beating Deer Park 38-26 and Riverside 41-30.
Timmy Pepperdine (103 pounds), Alec Ward (112), Joey Fio (130), Kyle Meschko (152), Jerod Morris (171) and Taylor Morris (189) all won two matches in dominating fashion.
Bulldogs' coach Mike Randles expected his top wrestlers to take care of business, but was pleasantly surprised by freshman Scotty Paramoure, who won his first varsity match via pin in less than two minutes.
"He looked like an experienced veteran when he got on the mat," said Randles of his freshman. "He's got a great future at Sandpoint."
Jerod Morris dispatched the competition at 171 pounds, pinning both his opponents in less than a minute.
Sandpoint hosts Colville today at 6 p.m. at the high school.

? Boys basketball: Bonners Ferry 65, Clark Fork 56
CLARK FORK — For three quarters, 1A Clark Fork more than held their own with 3A Bonners Ferry, then Spenser Behrens and Ryan Winebark took over, leading the Badgers to a 65-56 win at Clark Fork on Tuesday night.
The Badgers duo combined for 35 points in the second half, sparking an explosive 27-point fourth quarter to finally put the Cats (0-2) away.
Thomas McMahon led the Cats with 15 points and eight rebounds in what his coach called the finest game he's had.
"He picks up loose balls and he's always around the basket," said Cats' coach Brian Powell. "And when he got shots, he made them."
Mike Martin added 12 points and six rebounds, and Tyler Broggi nine and eight as turnovers and poor free throw shooting doomed the Cats' shot at an upset. The Cats finished 9-24 from the stripe and committed 30 turnovers, yet still had a shot at the game — testament to how tough they can be when they hit North Star League play.
"In the fourth quarter their (Bonners Ferry) pressure started to get to us," said Powell. "Behrens and Winebark outscored our entire team in the second half. We didn't hold our poise well and I'm disappointed that we didn't finish strong, but we showed potential."
Jesus Mendez scored 10, A.J. Bennett eight and James Krejci seven for the Badgers.
