Three Bulldogs named to All-State team

| December 12, 2006 8:00 PM

BOISE — Running back Kurt Stoll, offensive lineman Riley Flanigan and punter Will Andrews were all named to the All-Idaho second team, announced Sunday by the Idaho Statesman in Boise.

Stoll, who was a first-team selection last season, had an equally impressive senior season, only to slip a team.

"For Kurt not to be first team, in my opinion, is not an accurate team," said Bulldogs' coach Mike Mitchell of Stoll, who rushed for more than 1500 yards and 20 touchdowns, despite being the focal point of opposing defenses. "If the newspapers don't recognize that, the colleges will."

Flanigan was a unique lineman in that he could not only drive most defensive lineman off the ball, he could also pull and use his quickness, a rarity for a center.

"I think Riley is first-team caliber as well," said Mitchell.

Andrews flat out had an incredible season punting the football. Mitchell said he had the No. 1 ranked punter in junior college four years ago, and he led the nation with a 40.3 yard average. Andrews averaged 40.6 this season, including and 83-yarder. He was also clutch whenever the Bulldogs needed a big punt.

"Will rates with anybody," said Mitchell. "He's a prospect."

Despite dominating Bishop Kelly for the majority of the game, not one Bulldog was named to the first team, while seven Knights made it. Typically the farther a team advances in the season, the better the odds of their players making the team. Had the Bulldogs advanced in the playoffs, it's a safe assumption a few more deserving players would have made the team.

Not a single player from the North Star League was named to the 1A team, a testament to the fact that the number of Southern and Eastern Idaho coaches is a huge factor in the process.

Lake City junior lineman Byron Hout, who helped the Timberwolves win the state 5A football championship, was named Player of the Year in 5A.
