COEUR d'ALENE — Lake City High sophomore guard Trent Bridges sparked a second-quarter surge with his defense as Lake City defeated Sandpoint 51-45 in an Inland Empire League boys basketball game Thursday night.

Bridges had three steals, three rebounds, two assists and a basket in the first half, which saw Lake City (8-9, 6-3 IEL) go from four points down midway through the first quarter to a 23-18 lead at halftime.

Sandpoint (8-10, 3-6) was forced to play catchup from then on.

Sandpoint led 9-5 after 4 minutes and was up 13-12 after one quarter. But the Bulldogs missed their first 12 shots of the second quarter, and fell behind by as much as eight points. Sandpoint went 5 minutes, 44 seconds between baskets in the quarter.

"Give credit to Lake City, they changed defenses (between man-to-man and 2-3 zone)," Sandpoint coach Tyler Haynes said. "Lake City wants you to walk the ball up, and for us, we have to get the ball down the floor. Give them credit, they got us into their methodical style."

Lake City was balanced. Brad Bemis had 13 points, three steals and three assists. Jarom Taylor added 12 points and six boards.

Michael Brewer scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Sandpoint, which shot 35.2 percent (19 of 54) from the floor. Chase Lowther added 12 points, and Brian Shultz had nine rebounds.

Sandpoint travels to Lewiston on Saturday.
