Why doesn't Idaho govern state's motor boat drivers?

| February 18, 2006 8:00 PM

I am extremely concerned that the state of Idaho has absolutely no laws governing the age and qualifications of motor boat drivers and water craft drivers.

I have had experiences with children as young as 12 years of age driving water craft with speeds up to 60 mph.

I have also seen numerous children from 12 years of age to whatever, driving $30,000-plus boats with 350 horse power engines, or bigger, weighing 2,000 to more than 5,000 pounds at 55 mph-plus, with absolutely no training, no driver's license and no knowledge of the laws of water.

Why do we have laws for driving a car, yet anyone can drive a boat that will do 100 mph or less with no licensing whatsoever.

I am asking that our legislators submit or support legislation that would require any person driving a motorized boat with an engine more than 8 horsepower to be licensed and to pass a test showing they are competent in the use and driving ability of a boat or watercraft.

As a minimum requirement, any person driving a boat should have a driver's license.

We have had many accidents and even deaths involving minors and it is about time that the legislature step up and take charge of this major problem for the safety of all concerned.
