PAFE's contributions are positive influence in district

| February 27, 2006 8:00 PM

I would like to share with the community the tremendous benefits our district as a whole, and the Lake Pend Oreille High School in particular, is receiving from the continued support of the Panhandle Alliance for Education. The PAFE has generously funded a four-year grant, Reading Partnership for Maximum Success, designed to significantly improve reading instruction and student achievement K-12. The total grant nears half a million dollars and proves PAFE's dedication and commitment to furthering education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District.

Recently, our staff was trained in research-based instructional strategies designed to serve the needs of our at-risk student population. Intensive interventions are necessary for LPO to reach our population of struggling readers, currently 80.4 percent of our seventh- through tenth-grade students. We must saturate student learning with very proactive curriculum intervention if we hope to accelerate student achievement, avoid literacy defeated students, and work toward LPO meeting the Idaho Department of Education's measure of Adequate Yearly Progress. Through the support of PAFE, training and resources necessary to implement these interventions were made possible. Thank you, PAFE, for enabling us to positively influence the literacy of alternative school students, a vital component to the continued health of our community.
