Area is long overdue for recreational center
The idea of a recreational center that is affordable for all residents, regardless of income, is long overdue in our community and has received a wide base of support from individuals and businesses throughout the district.
Mr. Wanamaker ("Quit Tapping Taxpayers …" Dec. 18, 2005) is incorrect when he suggests that folks from as far away as Priest River and Spirit Lake will have to pay for something they would never use because of the distance.
The proposed Pend Oreille Recreational District does not include the areas he mentions. Its limits are the Lake Pend Oreille School District boundaries (excluding Selkirk Recreational District at Schweitzer Village). Thus, no one within the district would have to drive more than 20 miles or so to enjoy inexpensive skating, swimming and other sports and activities. Most of the kids go to school here every day and should easily be able to participate in after-school activities. This facility will be a tremendous asset for the families and youth in this community, providing a variety of activities for all ages.
I appreciated Mr. Payne's concern for the private health clubs in the area, but we need a recreational center open to everyone and not just those who can afford the dues. Besides, I understand that the proposed rec center pool will also include a water park, thus providing activities not available elsewhere in our community.
No one likes the idea of more taxes. However, most people readily see that the benefits far outweigh the costs in this case, including a financial boon to local businesses. The various venues and programs (swimming, skating, hockey, concerts, etc.) will bring in lots of outside money for local businesses during the leanest time of the year (winter). The greatest benefit, however, will not be measured in dollars, but rather in showing local seniors, families and children that the community values them. I for one, will vote yes.
