Let's turn fairgrounds into a first-class facility

| January 8, 2006 8:00 PM

I fully agree with Cort Gifford's letter regarding the Sandpoint Centre Corporation's proposed sports complex.

Why re-invent the wheel when we already have a facility that provides our kids a place for "something to do," as well as providing a venue for numerous events in our community. It's called the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

The fairgrounds have been serving Bonner County for more than 80 years, educating, entertaining, and enhancing the overall quality of life. Kids from every corner of the county have enjoyed 4-H, horse shows, volleyball, baseball, soccer and much more at the fairgrounds.

The Bonner County Fair Association is a non-profit organization, not subsidized by tax dollars. Currently, there is an enormous need to repair, replace and upgrade the existing facilities so that the fairgrounds can be used to its full potential. The primary needs are: replace the floor and the roof of the main building; upgrade the food court; and install an all-weather cover over the outdoor arena. There is also a huge need for roofing, carpet and electrical work. If these repairs are made, the fairgrounds could host numerous regional and national events, which would bring money into the community as well as help the fairgrounds become self-sustaining.

Contractors, electricians, carpenters, painters, carpet layers — your help is needed!

Come on, Bonner County! If we're going to come together once again as a community to support something, let's start a grass roots campaign to do what's needed to make the fairgrounds a first class facility the entire County can be proud of!
