Has political correctness run amok in America?

| January 9, 2006 8:00 PM

Has political correctness run amok? Instead of "merry Christmas," we hear "happy holidays" lest we offend someone. Rather that "Christmas tree." We now have "holiday trees." We are taking the significance out of the celebration of Christ's birth. We talk about tolerance and diversity but it seems to apply only to a vocal few.

If nothing is sacred, nothing really matters. Meanwhile, the religious majority is forced to accept symbols of "cultural evolution" such as the tolerance statue at the Bonner County Courthouse. The indefinable nature of the stature is more confusing than illuminating, especially to visitors. Meanwhile, the Ten Commandments (in our park) offer us something real to live by. In the end, mere tolerance is for people who believe in nothing. It leads to cultural suicide by removing moral yardsticks. We can stand for something or fall for everything.

Accepting people of differing racial ancestry is an essential human responsibility. Yet tolerating any kind of a moral behavior is socially irrational and personally destructive. Maybe it's time to get back to doing what's right rather than just what feels good.
