Strong homes, not center, will transform community

| January 23, 2006 8:00 PM

With all the recent letters and now Sagle's TUFF group questioning the scope and audacity of the Kootenai Recreation center boondoggle, I'd like to add the following.

It appears that Dr. Pierce's brother-in-law is following in the footsteps of an Oregon man who could not sell some scrubby acreage, so he donated it to the county for a juvenile detention facility. He then wrote off the new developed value instead of the original $145,000 asking price.

If Schweitzer people aren't included in this district, can they use the facility?

The recent ad by the district supporters says this is only the first phase? What's next, a North Idaho version of Vegas's Luxor resort? Will we be asked to shell out even more for employee benefits?

Also, in spite what the ad states, most houses here are at least $200,000 which translates into $120 more annually, not the low-ball figures in the ad.

The vague "pap"-filled ad and the authors of the few letters that parrot it should get a grounding in reality. Strong communities, families and children all start with a stable home where parents are not out all the time struggling to pay ever increasing taxes for the luxuries of a few's bloated pipe dreams.

Come Feb. 7, send them a message with a loud, clear "no" vote at Sandpoint High, Sandpoint Community Hall, Wrenco Community Center, the Clark Fork, Southside, Northside and Sagle schools.

P.S. Late news, folks, upon going to the Sandpoint Center Corp's Rec. Center Web site, it clearly states, that except for some basic after school activities, adult and other amenities, sports/hockey, games, etc. will have a fee attached to them over and above your tax increase.

Lovely, huh?
