Pizza analogy doesn't cut it

| January 30, 2006 8:00 PM

Robert Pierce wants to promote his vision of a local community recreation center by saying "It will cost less than an $8 pizza each month. That may or may not be true. If the taxes on a home and property valued at $371,000 are already $4471 plus. That's 533 $8 pizzas each year. How many pizzas are we supposed to give up in the name of taxes?

One letter stated that Rockford, Ill., had great success with their facilities. What they didn't say, Rockford is the third largest city in Illinois with more than 150,000 residents within the city limits and their facilities are controlled and managed by the Rockford Parks and Recreation District. The entire population of Bonner County is a small fraction compared to Rockford.

Property values may increase with an area recreation center, but it only helps those who choose to put a "For Sale" sign on their property.

Vote "no" on Feb. 7.
