Learn the facts regarding efforts to eradicate milfoil

| July 3, 2006 9:00 PM

As a member of the Bonner County Waterways Committee, I have been dealing with the milfoil issue from the start.

Previously there was a lack of funding that hindered our ability to do more to contain the milfoil. It was a garden hose on a forest fire. In the meantime, the problem has multiplied 10 fold in five years. Now, with the state funding available, we are able to shock treat the entire problem with chemicals and follow up in some spots with diver dredging.

It is the most effective and least expensive way to contain and eliminate the problem. The safety of the chemicals being used is well established. For those who have not been involved, up to this point, I can understand your trepidation when it comes to the application of chemicals but the cost of diver dredging and the time line to implement it doesn't make economic or logistical sense.

Harvesting can have limited effect in certain areas but it doesn't remove the root balls so the problem still exists. Harvesting can fragment the plant dispersing it to other areas, exacerbating the problem.

I urge those who have concerns about chemicals to fully investigate the treatment process and the safety of Sonar. It, along with 2,4-D have been used in the state of Washington and many other states for years with no adverse effects.

The milfoil problem, if not treated, will have long-term consequences on the economic health of Bonner County. It effects the fishery, boating and the general health of the lakes system. These our vital to our tourist industry. Your informed support is appreciated while we deal with this overwhelming issue.
