Chemical use foes failed to make case

| July 12, 2006 9:00 PM

I feel much better about the chemicals placed in our lake now that we've heard from Leonard G. Horowitz. If this is the best shot opponents of chemical use can take, we're safe from harm. They've been telling us of other approaches that are cheaper, safer and just as effective, but I've not seen a scientifically-based, rationally-reasoned example that would apply to our situation. With all his credentials I thought Horowitz was sure to provide it. Instead, he provided 15 column inches of hyperventilated name-calling and accusations of criminal fraud.

On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't feel so comforted by Horowitz's Harvard education, "international renown," and three national bestsellers. A search of the NY Times archives did not reveal a single book by him even reviewed, let alone placed on any of their best seller lists in the past 25 years.

Confess, Madam Editor! Did you give this fellow a forum in the Bee just to make chemical opponents look bad?
