Lewis-Clark sweeps Riley Creek in doubleheader

| July 18, 2006 9:00 PM

SANDPOINT — Riley Creek finally got the bats going, putting some crooked numbers on the scoreboard and banging out 17 hits, but it wasn't enough as they were swept by Lewis-Clark in a doubleheader Tuesday at sunny War Memorial Field.

Clay Montgomery had three hits, and Ben Turner, Tyler Lichty and Ricky Klontz added two apiece as the Lakers (8-25, 6-11) fell 13-11 in the first game. They scored two or more runs in four of the innings, and out-hit Lewis-Clark, but couldn't capitalize on numerous bases loaded situations and lost the lead late.

Lewis-Clark (33-12, 15-5) scored nine runs in the first two innings of the second game, running away 14-3 in five innings. Montgomery, in the midst of a sizzling hitting streak, stung the ball all day and launched a homer into the right field power alley.

The Lakers rebounded nicely from a couple of lopsided losses to Coeur d' Alene the night before, going toe to toe with the league-leading visitors from Lewiston in the first game.

The Lakers host Cranbrook today. The winner will be the 4th seed in the District tournament, and the loser 5th. First pitch is at 1 p.m. at War Memorial Field.
