LeRoy P. Selberg, 86, passed away in Sandpoint, Idaho, on Tuesday, July 25, 2006.

Vigil Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 31, in Coffelt's Funeral Chapel in Sandpoint.

The Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 1, in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sandpoint. The Rev. Dennis C. Day will officiate. Interment, with military honors, will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.

Friends are invited to call, at Coffelt Funeral Service, on Monday from noon until time for the vigil service.

LeRoy was born in Colburn, Idaho, on Dec. 7, 1919, the son of John and Mabel (Nettleingham) Selberg. He attended the Colburn School and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1938. He logged locally for a short time, joining the U.S. Navy in 1941 prior to Pearl Harbor.

On Feb. 12, 1949, he and Bernice Reynolds were married in Newport, R.I.

He spent 25 years in the service of his country with the U.S. Navy. He saw active duty in three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam, spending most of his career in the Pacific. He was on many ships, including the battleship USS Tennessee, the heavy cruiser USS Columbus and the aircraft carriers USS Kearsarge and the USS Ticonderoga. He retired in 1966 with the rank of lieutenant.

He returned to the Colburn area and went to work at the Colburn Mill for the Pack River Lumber Company. He worked as a saw filer, retiring again in 1985. He also operated a small cattle ranch with his uncle, Ray Nettleingham.

LeRoy was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Fleet Reserve Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a life member of the National Rifle Association.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Bernice Selberg of Sandpoint; two sons, Thomas Selberg of Hayden, Idaho, and John Selberg of San Diego, Calif.; three grandchildren, Kurt Selberg of Pullman, Wash., Julia Selberg of San Diego, Calif., and John Anthon "Jack" Selberg of San Diego; a sister, Helen Brockway of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; two nieces, Sharon Selberg of Hope, Idaho, and Jackie Shelton of Coeur d'Alene; and a nephew, James Brockway Jr. of Portland, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his brother, John Selberg.
