Property tax reduction starts with new officials

| June 12, 2006 9:00 PM

Have we forgotten the 48-percent ad valorem tax increase in 1992 and the major increase in property taxes in 1995? Other than the '92 debacle where all three of the liberal Bonner County commissioners were summarily dismissed at their next election, the state Legislature controls the method of calculating property tax values based on market value.

We have been discovered. North Idaho is beyond doubt a wonderful place to spend the summer for seniors who have retired from the concrete jungles. Do not expect property values to decrease.

Regardless of appraisal, the actual property tax paid is a reflection of the county budget. Anyone serious about reducing their property taxes must elect to the Bonner County commissioners office those who will attempt to reduce the cost of Bonner County government. The last time this was done was the election of '96 when Larry Allen and Bud Mueller were elected. Concerned citizens formed TUFF (Taxpayers United For Freedom). Headed By Bill Denman after the '95 tax shock. Bill and other members of TUFF, Tom Clark and Paul Votava (county assessor) and others, testified before the state Legislature several times over the years attempting to bring some common sense and restraint to Idaho and Bonner County government cost.
