SANDPOINT — Solid pitching and defense were the order of the day as the Riley Creek Lakers won both ends of a doubleheader over the Prarie Cardinals Monday at War Memorial Field.
Glen Poelstra threw a two-hitter, striking out six as the Lakers (5-3, 3-2) downed the Cardinals (0-7, 0-5) 3-2 in the first game. Poelstra hung around the plate with his pitches and let his defense make plays for him.
"I was mainly hitting my spots," said Poelstra (1-2). "My curve was breaking pretty good."
Tyler Lichty hit a three-run homer in the first inning to provide all of the runs his team would need, as the Cardinals' Zack Aker would put up goose eggs the rest of the game.
Game two was a pitchers dual, as both team combined for only eight hits in the well-played 2-1 victory for the Lakers. Ricky Klontz had a double and triple in the win, as Tyler Lichty and the Cardinals' Cory Rohrenbach took turns shutting the bats down.
"These kids have the biggest hearts in the world," said Cardinals' coach Al Bevacqua, who despite the outcome was happy with the crisp game his team played. "We've been playing tough with every team in the league; record is just a number."
