Bulldogs fall in openers
LEWISTON — The Bulldogs dropped both ends of a season-opening doubleheader against Lewiston on Tuesday, falling 6-1 and 12-2.
The Bulldogs kept the first game close despite making an uncharacteristic eight errors. Coach Mike Givens refuses to make any excuses for his club, but that's almost to be expected when it's the first time all year you've taken a field.
"It was a little tough for the kids, we just need to make the routine plays; put the ball in play," said Givens.
Tyler Lichty pitched 3 2/3 innings without an earned run, as pitchers were kept on a pitch count this early in the season, and Zach Manor was solid in relief.
Ricky Klontz, Clay Montgomery and Ricky Stewart had the three Bulldog hits.
In the second game the Bulldogs defense improved even though they allowed more runs as Alex Wolfe had a double and Klontz and Manor each added a hit.
Opening on the road against one of the top teams in state with almost no field time, all in all, not to bad a performance. The good news is the snow has finally melted from the field at War Memorial Field.
The Bulldogs' next game is Thursday at Lake City.
? JV game: Corey Hawkins threw a one-hitter through five innings, as the Bulldogs lost 3-2 in extra innings. Lewiston won the second game 7-6.
