He spent his early years in the Palouse country, graduated from Moscow High School, received a bachelor's degree in agricultural sciences, and a master's degree in education from the University of Idaho. After college he worked for a year as an agriculture teacher in Troy. He then worked for the state of Idaho as director of "On the Farm Training" for World War II veterans. He traveled the state of Idaho in this position where he met and married his wife, Olivia Verdal of Sandpoint in 1953.

He taught high school vocational agriculture for 17 years in Genesse, Priest River, Bonners Ferry and Sandpoint. He also spent one year working for the Farmer's Home Administration. He relocated his family to McMinnville Oregon in 1966 where he finished his teaching career in 1985. He passed on a strong work ethic to his four children largely through a family farming operation.

After retirement, he learned Norwegian and became proficient with the language. He enjoyed traveling to Norway to spend time with his wife's extended Norwegian (Verdal) family. He enjoyed reading and translating his Norwegian Bible into English as a study technique. He attended the Lutheran church all his married life. He loved the Lord and enjoyed sharing his faith.

He loved riding horses with his granddaughter, Sarah and spending time outdoors hunting elk in Idaho and northeast Oregon with his family and friends. He also enjoyed snow and water skiing, camping, boating, and fly fishing, particularly in North Idaho. He shared and instilled this passion for the outdoors with his wife, children, grandchildren, and many friends. His storytelling around the campfire will be sorely missed.
